Bronx apartment fire leaves dozens of families displaced and eight injured.

A Bronx apartment fire that raged for 12 hours left at least eight people injured and forced dozens of families from their homes.

The blaze began in the upper levels of a building on Wallace Avenue shortly before 1:45 a.m. Friday and was brought under control just before 2 p.m.

Strong winds intensified the flames as they tore through the roof of the building.

« Heavy fire destroyed all the apartments on the top floor, burned through the roof, » said FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito. « Initially we had fire companies inside, conducting searches, removing people and attempting to fight the fire. The fire had too much headway, it’s extremely dangerous to our firefighters. »

A resident recalled smelling smoke before firefighters urgently ordered everyone to evacuate.
